The Legal Risk Management Consultant provides relevant professional liability risk management consultation and education to insureds, policyholders, and their representatives to promote patient safety and reduce the potential for and fortify the defense of professional liability claims. The Legal Risk Management Consultant assists and supports the Underwriting Department with evaluating health care professional liability risk for prospective and existing insureds and recommends risk management services and products for risk mitigation and elimination. The Legal Risk Management Consultant also assists and supports the Claims Department as directed by the Vice President, Claims and the Vice President, Risk Management.
Consults with insured physicians, other health care professionals, and related staff or employees by telephone and email and in-person. Consultations will include informational interviewing; active listening; medical and legal research as department resources allow; providing verbal or written professional liability risk management advice, answers, information, and resources; and following up with the insured as needed. Consulting also includes writing concise, pertinent, well-researched, and understandable responses.
Collaborates with Claims, Underwriting, and Marketing and Corporate Communications departments. Collaboration will include informational interviewing, active listening, medical and legal research within department’s resources, providing answers or information, reviewing documents, and writing concise, pertinent, well-researched, and understandable responses. Collaboration also includes working with insureds and their related staff and employees following their report of an incident to the Claims department and upon referral by the Claims department.
Collaborates with and supports other Risk Management Consultants to produce and provide well-rounded responses to Hotline calls and emails, articles, audio and video recordings, and presentations.
Answering Risk Management Hotline telephone calls and emails a minimum of the equivalent of 15 hours per week.
Researches and writes all MICA Risk Management articles, newsletters, scripts, and customer guidance documents, and ensures review and publication within deadlines. The number and frequency of publications may increase as department resources allow. The formats and intended audiences may vary.
Participates in intra- and inter- department meetings, including preparation for such meetings, active listening, and respectful and professional conduct.
Participates in annual corporate and department goal-setting and working independently and on teams to accomplish goals and meet deadlines.
Serves as project leader when assigned.
Initiates and/or maintains appropriate professional contacts and network, including membership in at least one state bar association and state and/or national risk management and health care-related professional organizations that promote MICA’s mission, vision, and/or core values.
Complies with Company and department documentation requirements for tasks, duties, responsibilities, expenses, budget planning, and performance. Correctly uses Company and department software programs, such as Concur for expenses and RMS for risk management service documentation.
Other projects and assignments as directed.
We will consider candidates who meet the following requirements:
Juris Doctor from an accredited law school
Active and unencumbered license to practice law in at least one state
Insurance defense, professional liability defense, health care law, or other applicable experience of 3 or more years
Legal research and writing experience
Travel up to 20% within or outside of state
