Gen Justice, an award-winning advocacy organization and public interest law firm for abandoned and abused children, seeks an analytical, organized, energetic, and problem-solving research attorney to advance its policy work and support its constitutional and civil litigation. The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience researching legal issues, analyzing and interpreting caselaw and statutes, and developing creative policy solutions to address real-world problems.


The successful candidate will share Gen Justice’s passion for mending our nation’s broken child welfare system, be adept at legal research and writing, understand how to read, analyze, apply, and draft statutes, be able to summarize and explain complex matters to attorneys and non-attorneys alike; possess exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal; be self-motivated and able to manage competing deadlines while consistently producing error-free work; and be person of integrity who appreciates a high degree of accountability.

The candidate will also be willing to occasionally assist the litigation team with brainstorming cutting-edge legal and constitutional arguments, preparing memos to assist with active cases, proofreading and cite-checking legal documents, and be confident in reading and interpreting court rules. The research attorney will report to Gen Justice’s Chief Counsel and focus primarily on the pursuit of legislative reforms, but will also support Gen Justice’s litigation team in their quest to protect the constitutional rights of children in the foster care system.

Familiarity with juvenile law and dependency proceedings is a plus, but not required. Prior legislative or policy experience is preferred. This is not a litigation position, so candidates need not be an active member of a state bar but must have successfully passed a bar exam. Gen Justice is headquartered in Phoenix, AZ but the right candidate could work remotely.
